Fortune Tellers have always had naysayers—more so as science and technology advances—but anyone who doubts the accuracy of fortune telling and predictions is missing the vital fact that earliest forms of fortune telling was based on a reliable mathematic principle: probability. The earliest fortune tellers were observers. They recorded the results of the actions the people around them took and they looked for indicators, or “omens,” of good and bad things to come, both from a person’s life choices and from things that people have little or no control over, such as the whims of nature.

When people speak of “omens,” of signals of good or bad fortune to come, they are relying on probability. Think of omens in their simplest terms: for example, a bunch of dark, rainy clouds is an omen of rain. This does not mean that it is guaranteed to rain where you stand, but more likely than not, it will rain. If it does not rain where you are, it will rain nearby. The probability of dark clouds leading to rain is too high to dismiss. At the very least, it serves as a warning, to get you on your guard and to make you better equipped to face what’s most likely coming at you.
